The Józef Mroszczak Honorary Award, sponsored by the Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Prof. Błażej Ostoja Lniski, was presented to Kazumasa Nagai (Japan) for outstanding achievements in arts, taking up humanistic topics and raising awareness of the role of art in the global development. The medals and the Józef Mroszczak Honorary Award statuette designed by Hanna Jelonek.

Both competitions are open to everyone. The Main Competition does not have a theme. Therefore, it is a cross-section of the world’s cultural diversity and current affairs from various areas. The issue that is the focus of the Thematic Competition is “The Changing World and Health”. Changes are taking place in the society, culture, politics and economy. We live in a risk society. Globalisation and localness collide and mediate. Contrasts catch the eye. We constantly draw from nature and transform it – more and more often in a conflicting and destructive manner. On 11 March 2020, the World Health Organisation announced the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. The world is still struggling, although vaccinations are in progress. But health issues in the modern world are innumerable! We can learn more from poster artists!  

 

 

In 2020, several interesting side events took place as part of the 27^th International Poster Biennale in Warsaw. They were the lead-in to what is about to happen during the key event taking place between: 12 June–28 August 2021. Most importantly, we have organised the International Poster Competition for art students under the honorary patronage of the Polish National Commission for UNESCO, concluded with an open-air (a must during the pandemic!) exhibition in the Koneser Praga Centre.

The International Poster Biennale in Warsaw is the oldest and one of the world’s most prominent arts events dedicated solely to poster art, and according to a lot of global poster artists – still number one.

The Biennale presents to a wide audience the most outstanding posters created by artists from all over the world in the interlude between the Biennales. 

On 6 June 1966, in the Zachęta building belonging to the Central Bureau of Art Exhibitions (now the National Gallery of Art) the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw was held for the first time. In 1994, the event moved from Zachęta to the Poster Museum at Wilanów, where it remained until 2016. Then, the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage entrusted the subsequent Biennales to the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. And so, in 2018 (the 26^th edition), it returned to the place that facilitated its beginning and development and helped shape the idea of confronting global achievements in poster design. The Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw has made a clear mark in all of the Biennale editions. It has played a crucial role in the development of Polish poster art, and the majority of the representatives of the famous Polish School of Posters have been its lecturers or graduates. The Biennale was initiated mainly by Eryk Lipiński, and then promoted and organised for years by Prof. Józef Mroszczak. Another figure closely connected to the event is Prof. Henryk Tomaszewski. In 1990, Prof. Lech Majewski joined the organising team, serving as President, who initiated the return to the source. The relation between the Academy and the Biennale – meandering, yet tight and constant – seems almost natural.
